To the ones who look away,

Every child in America is deserving of growing up in a safe, compassionate environment. Getting through the teenage years is one of the hardest things anyone experiences in their lifetime. And anyone who has made it through grade-school, even, knows that these years are an abundance of confusion, contradictions, and the acceptance of the fact that one’s own peers can be very, very cruel. You are constantly told by the world to accept yourself for who you are, but that at the same time you must conform to the social norms or suffer the consequences. You are told that everybody is different, unique, but that you must also be like everybody else, which in itself is already incredibly confusing. This contradictive aspect of modern society is something we’re all somewhat aware of, but cannot seem to find a solution to. We’re all trying to decipher where we would be best-suited in the world. Due to the sometimes antagonistic view towards anything ill-fitting to our social norms all children are struck with the potential of being tormented, including the LGBT community. No matter what your spiritual beliefs consist of, everyone should be able to agree with the simple fact that no child should ever feel unsafe at school. Schools are a place for learning, and for gaining the same opportunity that every child in America is promised; equality and the chance to succeed.  

 According to the National schools climate survey in
New York, safety is an issue for LGBT youth. This survey paints a realistic picture of this problem, a reported 63% of these students admit they felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation, and the numbers are much higher for transgender students (80%). It seems that for transgender students, the climate is likely to be much more hostile. A shocking 81.9% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 38.3% were physically harassed, and 18.3% were actually physically assaulted. About one third of these students admit they have skipped a class to avoid being harassed, and the grade point average is lower for the students that are harassed the most. It is obvious that this bullying takes a very literal toll on their schoolwork, and that should never be the case. Bullying of this caliber can have intense effect on one’s self-worth. It can lead to depression, substance abuse and even suicide. The same study showed that while coming out as gay brings higher rates of psychological well-being it can also lead to a much higher level of peer victimization. A supportive environment, both at home and at school is very important to the emotional health of these teens. A study done in Oregon showed that LGBT youth are 17.3% more likely to commit suicide then their heterosexual peers, and 20% more likely when in an unsupportive environment. It is important that schools and teachers continue taking steps to solve this bullying epidemic in our country.

At this point there is no federal law that directly addresses bullying, although every state has their own laws, policies, or both. Seth’s law was passed in
California, in response to the suicide of a boy named Seth Walsh shortly after being rescued from a group of bullies. It is supposed to force schools to update their bullying policies to include bullying based on perceived sexual orientation. Although this is a step in the right direction, it’s not perfect. Parts of the law have been removed due to budget problems that would have had bullies placed in counseling/anger management to help get to the root of the issue. Teachers should be some of the first people to take action, because of the fact that they are with these children at school. They are the ones that have the opportunity to witness bullying first hand and take action. Seth’s law is a perfect gateway to start changing. It is supposed to require schools in California to have a strong anti-bullying policy that specifically addresses sexual orientation and gender identity. It states that you must have a planned process for handling this type of bullying, and that teacher and staff must intervene if it is witnessed. Schools must make these new rules public, meaning posting them where people can see them so that they are aware that something is supposed to be done. Why is it that many schools ignore this new law? It is possible that they just don’t know how to handle this type of bullying, or that they are afraid of outspoken anti-gay parents? Whatever the reason, we all need to remember that we are talking about children here

Bullying is a problem that is deeply rooted, and cannot necessarily always be solved by traditional means. In my opinion, if you simply suspend a student for violent actions against another, that will just incite more anger and take time away from their education. Missing out on school should never be an option, and it definitely shouldn’t be considered a consequence. We need to start teaching these bullies, and their parents, that even if you don’t agree with someone’s lifestyle, it does not in any way make it okay to harass them for it. Childhood is hard, but this is an entirely different level of acceptance, and of bullying in the modern day world. LGBT youth face possible rejection from everyone- peers, religion, and in some cases their own
families. I have many friends who are gay, and they all seem to have realized it at a young age. They admit that it’s certainly not an easy thing to accept, and when you finally get to that point in self-actualization you can only hope that people will accept you as well. Bullying is a terrible thing, because it is often an attack regarding the very thing you are most self-conscious about. It can take a huge toll on the emotional health of a young person, and teaches them that it’s normal to feel worthless and rejected. Bullying takes many forms, and can be verbal, violent, or just complete shunning of one’s own existence. Gay bullying is a particularly hard problem to face, because a person’s reasons for rejecting it can be deeply rooted, in religion, politics, culture, et cetera

Once a person has admitted to themselves that they are gay it is very unlikely for that to change. No matter how disapproving you are, you are never going to completely change a person, and it’s not your place to do so. I hope there is at least one teacher at every school that cares about this issue. The smallest of changes can really make a difference, which could be starting a GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) or just simply talking to your students. If just one person decides to try and make a difference, often it can lead to others jumping on board as well. If you see something going on, never look away. Do something about it. All it takes is a few small changes, a few hard conversations, and we could be on the path of ending this bullying completely.

This is a scholarly journal article that adresses the rate of teen suicide in the LGBT community based on their social environment. they began by creating an index based of different factors, such as
  • The number of same sex couples.
  • The number of registered democrats.
  • Whether or not the schoolhad a GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance).
  • School policies that protected LGBT kids specifically.
The results were that LGBT youth were almost 17.3% more likely to commit suiced then heterosexual youth, and 20% more likely when they are in an unsupportive environment. This study was done across 34 oregon counties, by way of the "Oregon Healthy Teens Survey". The results were adjusted to include factors on the idividual level, including binge drinking, abuse by an adult, depressive symptoms, and peer victimization (IE. Bullying).

This is an article from Time magazine. Seths law is a measure passes in california aimed at schools, that requires them to update their anti-bullying policies anti-discrimination policies. It puts more focus on bullying aimed at people because of percieved sexual orietation, and was created in response to a story about a boy names Seth Walsh commited suicide shorthly after his mother saved him from a group of bullies. This atricle points out that key parts of this act have been removed, and it leaves room for it not to work. They took out a part that would requre bullies to do programs like anger management and counseling due to budget problems, instead of simply being suspended. This act is a sign that things are changing, but it is still very likely that schools wont particiapte fully. They worry that the state wont do enough to enforce this new law, and 80% of gay students still claim that schools do little or nothing to protect them.

This study contained a lot of good data and statistics. I want to include them all  because I like the range of information they collected, it really gives you an idea of the impact of school environment and what it can do to a student. The most intresting part was how many students are actually facing this problem. There is a large range of facts about the impact on school work, social interaction, and about what teachers are doing to help. They point out that things have improved greatly over the years and I think that proves that we can make a difference.

  • 63.9% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 27.1% reported being physically harassed and 12.4% reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their gender expression.
  • 84.9% of LGBT students heard "gay" used in a negative way (e.g., "that's so gay") and 71.3% heard homophobic remarks (e.g., "dyke" or "faggot") frequently or often at school.
  • 6 in 10 LGBT students (63.5%) reported feeling unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation; and 4 in 10 (43.9%) felt unsafe because of their gender expression.
  • LGBT students reported feeling unsafe in specific school spaces, most commonly locker rooms (39.0%), bathrooms (38.8%) and physical education/gym class (32.5%).
  • Transgender students experienced more hostile school climates than their non-transgender peers - 80% of transgender students reported feeling unsafe at school because of their gender expression.
  • Nearly one third of LGBT students (29.8%) reported skipping a class at least once and 31.8% missed at least one entire day of school in the past month because of safety concerns.
  • The reported grade point average of students who were more frequently harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender expression was lower than for students who were less often harassed (2.9 vs. 3.2).
  • Increased levels of victimization were related to increased levels of depression and decreased levels of self-esteem.
  • 60.4% of LGBT students never reported an incident of harassment or assault to school personnel.
  • A considerable number of students reported discriminatory policies or practices against LGBT people by their school or school personnel. Students indicated the most common discriminatory policy or practice was related to treatment of LGBT relationships (e.g., related to dates for school dances and public display of affection).
  • Being out in school had positive and negative repercussions for LGBT students - outness was related to higher levels of victimization, but also higher levels of psychological well-being.
Positive Interventions and Support
  • Having a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) in school was related to more positive experiences for LGBT students, including: hearing fewer homophobic remarks, experiencing less victimization because of sexual orientation and gender expression, being less likely to feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation (54.9% of students with a GSA vs. 70.6% of other students) and having a greater sense of belonging to their school community.
  • Students in schools with an LGBT-inclusive curriculum, i.e. one that included positive representations of LGBT people, history and events, heard fewer homophobic remarks, were less likely to feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation (43.4% of students with an inclusive curriculum vs. 63.6% of other students), were more likely to report that their peers were accepting of LGBT people (67.0% vs. 33.0%) and felt more connected to their school.
  • The presence of school personnel who are supportive of LGBT students contributed to a range of positive indicators, including higher grade point averages (3.2 vs. 2.9), greater likelihood of pursuing higher education, lower likelihood of missing school and lower likelihood of feeling unsafe in school (53.1% of students with supportive school personnel vs. 76.9% of other students).
  • Compared to students at school with a generic policy that did not include protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, students attending schools with a comprehensive anti-bullying policy that included specific protections heard fewer homophobic remarks, experienced lower levels of victimization related to their sexual orientation, were more likely to report that staff intervened when hearing homophobic remarks and were more likely to report incidents of harassment and assault to school staff.
  • Despite the positive benefits of these interventions, less than half of LGBT students (45.7%) reported having a Gay-Straight Alliance at school; few (16.8%) were taught positive representations about LGBT people, history or events in their school; only about half (54.6%) could identify six or more supportive educators; and less than a tenth (7.4%) attended a school that had a comprehensive anti-bullying policy.
Changes in School Climate for LGBT Youth over Time
  • The percentage of students hearing homophobic remarks, such as "dyke" or "faggot" frequently or often has seen a major decline since 2001.
  • In 2011, there was a significant decrease in harassment and assault based on sexual orientation compared to findings released from previous years.
  • There was a small increase in portion of students who reported having a Gay-Straight Alliance at school.
  • Students reported a significant increase of positive representations of LGBT-related topics in their curriculum.
  • There was a small increase in portion of students who reported having access to LGBT-related Internet resources through their school computers.
I think this study was very important because it shows that things are in fact getting better, and it really dosnt take much to see improvment. there are a lot of programs out there that are making a HUGE impact on the mindset of youth, such as the it gets better project

Proposal.

Topic: Bullying due to gender, or going against your gender in any way.
Exigence: Bullying is a growing issue for anyone who happens to be gay, lesbian, or transgender. There is a large amount of anger towards these people, and it is being passed down through generations. Schools should be doing more to protect peoples rights, and a lot of them dont have policys specifically adressing homophobic bullying. Even when these policys are in place, they are often not enforced. These kids are at a higher risk of suicide, expecially when in an unnsupportive environment.
Claims: I think its important that we bring attention to these issues, because it makes no sense to continue to bring hate into our next generation. It is unnacceptable for anyone to be bullied based on somebodys perception of 'normal'. This is not a 'choice', as people so often think and it is unfair for people to be treated differently due to their sexual orientation.

"According to recent gay bullying statistics, gay and lesbian teens are two to three times as more likely to commit teen suicide than other youths. About 30 percent of all completed suicides have been related to sexual identity crisis. Students who also fall into the gay, bisexual, lesbian or transgendered identity groups report being five times as more likely to miss school because they feel unsafe after being bullied due to their sexual orientation."

"In a 2005 survey about gay bullying statistics, teens reported that the number two reason they are bullied is because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender expression. The number one reason reported was because of appearance."

I plan to adress cyberbullying, physical and mental abuse, and to teach you about the actual statistics today. Things are getting better but we still have a lot of work to do if we want kids to grow up in a safe environment. People need to realize that what other people do dosnt affect you at all unless you make it that way.

  • Over half, about 56 percent, of all students have witnesses a bullying crime take place while at school.
  • A reported 15 percent of all students who don't show up for school report it to being out of fear of being bullied while at school.
  • There are about 71 percent of students that report bullying as an on-going problem.
  • Along that same vein, about one out of every 10 students drops out or changes schools because of repeated bullying.
  • One out of every 20 students has seen a student with a gun at school.
  • Some of the top years for bullying include 4th through 8th graders in which 90 percent were reported as victims of some kind of bullying.

RA #3

“The decent of men” By Dan Kildon was written in 2006 and is about how the current generation is seeing an increase in females attending college. This might result in women getting a lot more of the most wanted jobs and also better positions at these jobs.
            According to Kildon, “In 2005, nearly 59% of undergraduate degrees were granted to women.”  This gap seems to be growing, because the number of men in college is decreasing while the number of women continues to grow. One in four women makes more money then their husbands. One problem that might arise from this is that educated women will be unable to marry educated men, because there are a lot less of them. It will no longer be a big deal not to be able to find a husband to make money, because the women are doing it themselves. Having women that make enough money to sustain them lessens the dependency for alimony and child support. A lot of men these days don’t mind giving up a little bit of their power and masculinity for time with their children. If their wives are making the money, less stress is put on them to be the breadwinner of the family. It might seem that men wouldn’t want to give up this power, because tradition says that they aren’t supposed to, but according to cultural trends and this article, they are actually usually ok with it. They don’t feel threatened by successful women and are more willing to share the household work. This article claims that men are “Better suited in many ways to be contemporary homemakers.” And that it is ‘one of the only aspects of contemporary urban and suburban life that requires physical strengths is household tasks”, and I think this is because of all the technology in the workforce. A lot of boys that were surveyed for this article didn’t think that working mothers had any negative effect on child development. This change in men’s viewpoints is important iof we want to reach equality for men and women. There is nothing that says men should be any better than women, or the other way around. And in reality, boys and men that still cling to the original roles can have their own psychological problems. Men that are “hypermasculine” are at “greater risk for a host of problems, including school suspension, date rape, and drug and alcohol abuse” They also tend to try and be dominant in their relationships, and with these changes in our culture these types of men will most likely fall behind over time because there is no need for this inequality.

bitches and hos

The article “From Fly Girls to Bitches and Hos”, was written by Joan Morgan in the late 90s and explores the idea of being a black feminist and a fan of rap. With a self proclaimed “self destructive obsession” with rap, you might wonder how a feminist can like music that is often so profanely sexist. She explains the importance of rap in black culture and how it is also part of the problem. Her priority as a feminist isn’t to stop rappers from being sexist in their lyrics, but to protect the love between black men and woman. This is a love that’s survived slavery, segregation, poverty and racism for so long and it is in danger. There is a bigger set of problems plaguing communities and rap is a mirror into that life.
                        Joan Morgan has been a fan of rap for a long time; she recognizes the presence of it in pop culture and describes its ability to be “Alternately beautiful, poignant, powerful, strong, irreverent, visceral, and mesmerizing”. Rap is unlike anything else, it gives people so much freedom to express themselves in a way that is incredibly creative and unique. But behind all that, there is an underlying set of things that appear in these lyrics, the music reflects a lot of pain. She states “what passes for “40 and a blunt” good times in most of hip hop is really alcoholism, substance abuse, and chemical dependency”. They often speak of killing each other as if it’s nothing. What is the cause for this anger and hate? She points out that this hate is no longer coming from ‘The Man” or “Racist White power”, but from people living in the same community. She talks about the life of “Notorious B.I.G.” as an example and talks about his album “Ready to die”. He was an ‘urban soldier’ whose life was dysfunctional from the beginning. He sings about robbery, jail, murder, drug dealing, money, sex, parties, and sex as if he was always just living an amazing life. Underneath the lyrics you can see the inner struggle this man was having, it “divulged his inner hell” and the album ended in suicide. The leading cause of death for black males fifteen to twenty five is murder and most of them die at the hands of other black men. Joan Morgan’s position as a single black feminist really gives her an up close view of what’s going on. She sees the effect this lifestyle has on men and woman and she wants to make it better. She believes rap is essential to the struggle these men are having because it takes us “Straight to the battlefield”, she sees past the “Machoism” and uses rap to get to the root of the problem so everybody can start to heal. She says woman have to learn to love these men realistically and find a way to stay at a ‘safe’ emotional distance. They have to realize that a person that doesn’t really love themselves isn’t capable of loving someone else in the way they need. “Its frighteningly clear that many brothers see themselves as powerless, when it comes to when it comes to facing the evils of the larger society, accepting responsibility for their lives, or the lives of their children”
 She urges feminists to change their strategy for ending sexism in rap. You can’t keep going after the words themselves. You can’t deny the fact that there are plenty of actual ‘bitches and hos’ around. Men are angry because when they didn’t have money, none of these women wanted anything to do with them. You have to get angry at the women who allow themselves to be exploited in music videos and in real life, and women need to fid their self esteem. Women have to realize that a lot of hostility comes from other women as well and these women need to come together and stop sexism together.  She wants to create a ‘space’ for women to come and share their feelings. She says having this space is the first step to getting all the pain and hurt out there and beginning the healing process. She wants to use rap as an avenue for this, a way to share the feelings of the women that are suffering and hopes someday her ‘brothers’ will realize the need for change. Feminism has to get away from complaining about this music and start taking action. She takes part in hip hop feminism conferences and is a speaker on these types of issues to this day. Even more than ten years later all these issues are still present, and forever evolving.

RR#2

“Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt”: Advertising and Violence, is written by Jean Kilbourne and focuses on the relationship between different advertising strategies and pornography, and also on the effects it has on society. “Men Conquer and Women Ensnare” (575) seems to be the way we see it these days. Kilbourne states “The main goal, as in pornography, is usually power over one another, either by the physical dominance of men or what is seen as the exploitive power of female beauty and female sexuality” basically meaning that advertising around the world has begun to glorify these stereotypical ideals of men and women. They make things like rape, violence, and viewing women as objects seem mainstream. The media does whatever it can to make money, even if that means dehumanizing people to the point where we are numb to the idea. She points out that we all like to believe we are unaffected by advertising, but in reality it is everywhere, and most of us don’t even realize how bad its become.
            Some of these ads really got to me, I hadn’t realized how low our moral standard has become. Glorifying rape and violence is unacceptable, and what shocked me was how blatantly some ads reference date rape. One alcohol ad suggests “If your date won’t listen to reason, Try a velvet hammer” (581), while another includes a wolf among a flock of sheep behind a bottle of Smirnoff (582). Is Czech, a jean ad portrays a women being held by the back of her pants and grabbed by three men, this one baffled me. It was meant to sell jeans to women, and all I see is someone getting attacked. If you saw these thongs happen on the street, wouldn’t you jump in to help? Do people really walk around with these ridiculous ideas of how men and women should act? Why do we have this ‘anything goes’ attitude when it comes to selling a product and making money. I worry about young girls in other countries, because the ads in other places are increasingly alarming.
            Nobody is safe when it comes to the sexuality of ads, and it has even gotten to the point where we use children. Where does the line cross to child pornography? They find very young girls to do nude shoots, and dress them up to look almost preteen. Once I looked at it this way, I was a little disgusted. It’s not fair to girls that we continuously get portrayed as these weak helpless beings, and I think in this day and age we should smarten up and stop. It’s already unsafe enough to be a young girl, and ads often exploit this. The gap between men and women is never going to close if we keep stressing all these stereotypes. An interesting point that Kilbourne makes references a Pepsi ad where young boys are staring up the skirt of Cindy Crawford, She asks us to think about if the situation was reversed, as in young girls looking at an older man. “We would fear for them, and rightly so” (589) Women are often seen as some kind of temptress, and it’s almost always the woman’s fault when something happens to her. It’s as if just being female is some sort of punishment, you get raped and it’s because of the way you dress. We are way more often seen as property and something everyone has the right to look at.
            Maybe we are just reading to deeply into these ads, but it seems more like there just getting worse. It’s not just about beauty anymore, not just about how skinny you are. It’s more about shock value and what these companies can get away with. I hope someday people start to realize that ads like this are only going to take us backwards and that stereotypes are unfair and go against what it really means to be human.

Final edit

Education in the United States is in a steady state of decline. In a time where American jobs have become more advanced, having well rounded, educated students is more important than ever. A steady stream of cuts over the past few years has resulted in a decrease in both the quality and motivation of our students. According to the LA times, when Jerry brown took office we were about $25 million dollars in debt, and since then we have experienced many large cuts to the general fund. It is now the smallest share in our history; I think it’s time to get our priorities straight in California. As a first year college student, I have witnessed the impact of these cuts in all aspects of public school; I recognize the value of education, how important it is to have teachers who care and a school with enough resources to sustain an intelligent student body. This is why I believe you should vote yes on Proposition 30.

Jerry Brown’s proposition 30, is a measure that will result in a slight increase in taxes (About 1/4th of a cent in sales tax for four years, and 1-3% raise in income tax for people who make $250,000 or more, for seven.). This money will be put towards k-12 schools (89%), community colleges (11%) and public safety. This goes back to proposition 98, which states that at least half of the general fund must be used for education, and this money can fulfill that requirement and frees up $5. billion that can go to things like higher education and healthcare. The left over money can go towards filling the gaps in our various public safety programs. If the measure is denied, we will be facing $4.8 Billion in “trigger cuts” to many important programs in California.  These cuts will most likely devastate the already crumbling system, and will cause many students to not be able to afford higher education at all.

Education is the best way to prepare our people to work and find jobs in this advancing market. Many jobs require much more than on the job training, they also require a general education. People need to have all the necessary critical thinking and writing skills if they want to be able to keep up with the world today. This country was once valued for its strength in education, and is now one of the lower ranking countries in that area. Countries like India and china have a much higher rate of graduate students, even accounting for their much larger populations. I feel like if the school system continues to decline like it has been, more and more jobs will be outsourced, and all of this will continue to weaken our middle class.

Critics argue that this proposition is just another way for politicians to take more of your money without giving back to schools at all. They claim that this is nothing but a “shell game”; supposedly they will be able to remove the money by taking the existing money for schools and replacing it with the money from the new taxes. They claim these “massive hikes” in taxes won’t go to schools at all and it will only put California in even worse debt. In the actual proposition, it is stated that there will be strong fiscal control over this problem, adding to the constitution that the money will go into a special account called the Education Protection Account (EPA), guaranteed only to be used for schools. They claim that the money will be audited every year to assure that its being spent where they say it will, they have authorized criminal prosecution for misuse of the funds. This proposition differs from others such as Proposition 13, because they plan on giving more control of the money to smaller governments, so that the public can help make decisions for the schools in their communities.
Over the past four years, there have been more than $56 billion dollars to education and public safety. These cuts have affected everybody from the elderly, to schoolchildren, and everyone in between. If we really want to change our economy in California we need to do things differently, why not put some of the focus on the next generation? I believe that young people today deserve to have a chance to follow their dreams, whether that is the American dream or something completely out of the box. In Monterey country, where I went to high school, they passed a measure called ‘Measure P’. This measure is similar to Proposition 30 because is imposed a similar rise in taxes and allowed many schools in my district to begin getting repaired. This measure passed because there are a lot of high income people in Monterey County, and they recognized the need for improvement in our schools. At my school alone the amount of work taking place was staggering, it was great to see how excited the students body and staff was. I honestly believe this is a lot of the reason our test scores and attendance got so much better that year. It seemed like once everyone realized the district was taking our school and education seriously, we felt like we should take it seriously as well.
            Now that I’m in college, I can now see the effect this economy is going to have on my future. Over the last few years, tuition has raised 89%, 400 classes were cut and the overall course offerings have gone down 10%. Cabrillo has some of the most amazing libraries and tutoring opportunities I’ve ever seen, and now I’m finding out that hours have been decreased. It’s nearly impossible to enroll in classes, and I absolutely cannot imagine how much worse it will be if proposition 30 doesn’t pass. I do know that we will lose space for 780 students and many more classes will be cut. I know that many more young people may give up, and might decide that school isn’t worth the trouble. I’m very thankful that I’m not the type to give up, and I have a lot of faith in my generation. I hope that the rest of California can see how much we deserve this, and I hope that every student going to school right now has the strive to be your best.

NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING DONE..


                Education in the United States is in a steady state of decline. In a time where American jobs have become more advanced, having well rounded educated students is more important than ever. A steady stream of cuts over the past few years has resulted in a decrease in both quality and motivation in our students. As a first year college student, I have witnessed the impact of these cuts in all aspects of public school; I recognize the value of education, how important it is to have teachers that care and a school with enough resources to sustain an intelligent student body

According to the LA times, when Gerry brown took office we were about 25 million dollars in debt, and since then we have experiences many large cuts to the general fund. It is now the smallest share in our history; I think it’s time to get our priorities straight in California. Gerry Browns proposition 30 is a measure that will result in a slight increase in taxes (About 1/4th of a cent in sale tax, and 1-3% raise in income tax for people who make 250,000 or more) and will put that money towards k-12 schools, community colleges and public safety. If the measure is denied, we will be facing $4.8 Billion in “trigger cuts” to many important programs in California. These programs include everything from higher education to public safety. These cuts will most likely devastate that already crumbling system, and will cause many students to not be able to afford higher education at all. It will result in three weeks less school for k-12 students and about 1 billion dollars in cuts to CSUs and community colleges.

In the past California has rejected many attempts to raise taxes and I definitely understand the mistrust people must feel with our government. It seems like this spending problem we have cannot simply be fixed by spending less, and it’s going to take a lot of time. Education is the best way to prepare our people to work and find jobs in this advancing market. Many jobs require much more than on the job training, they also require a general education. People need to have all the necessary critical thinking and writing skills if they want to be able to keep up with the world today. This country was once valued for its strength in education, and is now one of the lower ranking countries in that area. Countries like India and china have a much higher rate of graduate students, even accounting for their much larger populations. These led to less police protection, increased fire response time, caused overcrowding in prisons, and hurt so many different groups of people. Proposition 30 will be a way to begin to fix this, as some of the funds will go back to these important programs. Prison overcrowding will be reduced by allowing more oversight of parolees, and will give people opportunities to take classes and improve their life instead of just staying in prison.

Proposal.

Title: Why is it important for proposition 30 to pass?

Author:
I am and 18 year old first year college student. I chose a community college that wasn’t the one that everyone from my high school went to, because I wanted a better and different opportunity. I make minimum wage and pay for classes without the help of financial aid. I think I am a credible source for this topic, because my experience in each aspect of lower and higher education is still fresh in my mind. I’ve witnessed the struggle of finding classes that work for me, because I commute and only have so many options. I’ve witnessed the struggle of high school students that no longer see the value in education, because of the lack motivation of everyone from teachers and staff, to parents that know they might never be able to afford the future they wanted there children to have. It’s sad when there’s nobody around to help you, and I'm ecstatic that I was able to get past all of that and go for my dreams anyways.

Date:
This is a time in our state and country of incredible economical strife, a time where we are so in debt it only makes sense to start having our priorities straight on where taxpayer money should go.

Topic:
Proposition 30 is a measure that is supposed to raise taxes in order to guarantee some money for schools, and I think at this time education might be the only thing that can keep our country from falling apart. This generation is important, because we are going to have to pick up all these problems in our future.

Exigence:
It only makes sense to give us an opportunity to get an amazing education, one that is both quality and affordable. We shouldn’t have to worry about paying off student loans in the future; we should be creating our existence by then. We shouldn’t have to worry about the quality of our education getting worse every year just because the school can’t afford to have enough classes for everyone, and has to keep cutting the things that are most important. I feel like there is no better place for taxpayer money to go, there always looking for some way to raise taxes, so why not make sure there is some money set aside for our future.

Intended audience:
Anyone who is going to vote, but doesn’t understand the effects it will have on this generation’s future. I feel like unless you’re going to school right now, or your children are, it’s almost impossible to understand the direction its going.

Prop 30 will:
Prevents cuts to K12 schools, as well as a shotened school year. This is hugly important, because if our younger generations arent getting enough money, the lack of motivation will start even earlier. Teachers tend to lose hope very easily and it can really take a toll on the quality of their teaching. I was lucky enough to go to an amazing elementary school on the east coast, and the difference in california shocked me. I felt significantly less challege when I moved here and it was depressing. I could have done work at that age that was much more intresting and at a much higher level, but because of the lack of funding and programs that dont allow you to go out of a certain range, I felt myself going backward all the way through highschool and I know that we all have so much more potentiall than what we were given.
Prevent a 250 million dollar cut to CSUs. Arent they expensive enough? At this point I cannot see myself being able to afford it at all, and that gets even more real to me when I see this statistic. There are so many impacted majors, overcrowded schools, and people that are forced into online classes when they know they will get a better experience with real people.
I dont think a raise in income tax of only 1-3% will make much of a difference to anybody, and it would be selfish not to realize how bad our generation needs this. Even if the money is somehow used for other purposes, at least we know there is always this chunk for the school system.

RR #1

The “Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education” By Horace Mann, written in 1848, is about the importance of a general education system in America.  In this particular piece ( He has written quite a bit on this subject) he stresses this using three different aspects of education, Physical Education, Education as a means of avoiding poverty, political, and Religious Education.  He believed that with proper education society would learn to create their own existence, and people of all different backgrounds and religions would truly have the same opportunity for success.  He worked to better every aspect of the common school, he wanted the public to get interested and help schools financially to ensure that improvements were made.  He spent many years going to a lot of different schools in America and discovered a few main principles that he believed were most important.
 This was written during a time period where the united states was still growing, and Mann believed that the gap between classes was growing instead of getting smaller like it should be, and believed education was the best way to bridge that gap.  One being that education should be a way to abolish poverty, because if people are ignorant they will continue to work minimum wage because that’s all they know.  I think he thought more educated people would go and create new jobs.  Basically it comes down to the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.  He wasn’t necessarily a poor man, so I think that caring so much about the welfare of others in society really shows his good character.
Mann thought that school should welcome people of all backgrounds and religions.  He still wanted schools to teach values and morals, but didn’t think that they should be particularly religious.  This is due to the fact that not nearly everyone would agree on the same one, and teaching kids good character is important.  I feel like that if school tried to teach this using religion a lot of kids wouldn’t listen or would think that these values were tied to that idea.
Mann also worked to better the actual school buildings, wanted well trained teachers who were paid enough to be motivated to give a quality education, and a larger more well rounded curriculum.  Mostly he just wanted the people themselves to understand the importance of education and be excited to make it better.  I really like this because before it seemed like school might not have been taken that seriously, and I’m glad that he made way for the future to have a better chance.  A lot of the ideas he came up with are still going on today and he contributed more time and effort than anyone I’ve ever heard of.

Week One

1. I beleive this poem is written in both spanish and english because both languages were a part of the narrarators life. The feeling I got from the peom is that as a kid she struggled with accepting her culture, not because she wasnt proud of it, only because of society and the way people during that time viewed them. In class today we discovered the incident in this poem took place in the late 1950's, a time where mexican americans were subject to racial segregation. Schoolchildren and adults were both discriminated against, and the speaker talks about the girls in class that didnt try and hide their heritage. Teresa seems to be a girl that she remembers for her defiance. She obviously wrote this peice for Teresa, and probably wrote it in spanish to show her respect and to show that shes proud of her people.


2. I feel like in the end she almost regreted trying so hard to fit in with americans, and probably wrote this poem with a new outlook. As a kid she probably didnt see the change coming in the future, and looking back as a young adult she wished she stood up for her poeple instead of trying to hide and quietlly do what they say. She realized now how big of a statement these girls were making and they were never afraid, people like this probably made the biggest contribution to change. She explains, during the fight, that her tactic to defy the system was to prove she could keep up with anyone else, that she wasnt stupid and could do just as well if not better than anyone else at school. I think she has a better understanding of Teresa now, because she realized that they even though there ways of dealing with it were different they both wanted the same thing, to prove everyone wrong. Mexicans were just as important part of american society as anyone else and they still are.

 Horace Manns View on education with ralation to wealth and povery.

Manns views Education as the most obvious possible way to avoid poverty. He begins with talking about how men are naturally devided into different classes, and points out that most people view it either one way or the other. The first being, that men are either going to have to work hard, and others are there to enjoy what they've already been given. The next is that all men are created equal and have an equal oppurtunity to work and earn. He compares all this to the fuedal time in england, because at that time the extremes in society were very prevelent. He claims that  "What force did then, money does now" , and he strongly beleives that if we spend a lot more time working on the quality of our education system all of this can be avoided. He states that there is no feasable reason that a properly educated intellegent group of people should end up being poor. It just dosnt make any sense, because if everyone is educated they should be able to create there own means of living. They should be creating jobs, thinking of new ideas and not everyone should be depending on what's already available. He names education "The great equalizer of the conditions of men", because if all over the world there is a general education system, then all the people around the world will have the same basic background information, and therefore a reasonably equal chance at success.
   I think all of these ideas make a lot of sense, and I wish that people understood better that the sytem still needs work. I think that is a candidate for school board brought all of this up, people would think that they were stating the obvious. I think it would be hard for people to accept that the way we've been doing things for all these years might not be entirely effective just yet. I think that the general education system, at least reffering to early education, is way too specific. It dosnt leave room for growth, kids are expected to do things a certain way, even if thats not necesarily the way they learn best. I think a lot of the focus should be removed from standardized tests and put toward working with individuals and finding that one thing each person is good at. Kids might have a better chance of finding something they're passionate about if that had more time to do the things they love.


I really want to include this, because I cant possibly say any of this better myself. This is the valadictorian speech of my senior class in highschool, and if anyone has ever struggled in public school I want you to watch this. This speech means so much to me, it made me so proud of each and every individual in my class, and gave me hope for the future.
